The Mamba Mentality

Community Blog Post: Memoirs
The definition of a memoir is , "A historical account or biography written from personal knowledge or special sources." Memoirs are often written as a recount back on something, often written by great actors, musicians, and athletes after stepping down and retiring from the field they dominated. In addition, a great memoir had great fluidity in it's writing. A well written memoir should flow like a rehearsed speech, and not have any gaps or choppy flow. It should flow smoothly from the first page until the reader closes the book after completing the entire read.

My personal favorite memoir is written by Kobe Bryant, a now retired former NBA superstar. In Kobe's memoir, The Mamba Mentality. I first read this memoir my senior year of high school. While Kobe is far from my favorite basketball player and I would not even consider myself a fan of his, he knows more about the game of basketball than nearly anyone one the planet. In the memoir, Kobe explains how when he was young and trying to learn how to be most effective in the league, he spent 3 years in his free time picking apart and dissecting the NBA Referees handbook. My favorite quote from the entire memoir came from this section. "Holds, travels, and all sorts of minor violations simply because i took the time to understand the officials' limitations. Kobe learned how to get away with nearly every loophole in the game through studying the handbook, and I always found this fascinating the way he took so much pride in learning everything about the game to make sure he would always give himself every chance he could to beat the offense. A large part of the book is Kobe breaking down the mentality he would approach every game of his career with. Those guys in the opposing team's uniforms were never looked at as friends by Kobe. He focused on trying to put the opposition into the ground every single game, and play as ruthless as possible until the final buzzer sounds. His teammates were his brothers in arm, and every night was a war. To be honest if some of the stuff Kobe claims came out as fake or false, it would not change anything for me to be honest. Half of the stories told about old stars are folktale and just stories, such as Wilt dunking on his free throws. But these stories and tales are what makes these players and their legacies live on forever. If you are interested, you can find the link to Kobe's memoir directly below.

I think many famous athletes should actually consider getting into blogging. Memoirs and ongoing blogs by peoples favorite athlete would easily pull massive amounts of fans to read. Not to mention it would be an easy source of income after retiring from the leagues.
